Once the home of Danish author Hans
Christian Andersen, Nyhavn is a popular area in Copenhagen with
tourists and locals alike. This picturesque and historic
harbor front is lined with both trendy and quaint bars and
restaurants. Although the food and beverages are certainly not
cheap here, Nyhavn is almost always packed with visitors, and in the
warmer months you will have a challenging time trying to find an
available table outdoors.
Nyhavn is the oldest section of Copenhagen’s harbor dating back to
the 1670’s. One of the oldest buildings still standing dates
to 1681.
To help preserve an "old world" nautical feel, only wooden hulled
historic sailing ships are permitted to dock here. At one time, Nyhavn had a rather notorious reputation for
drunkenness and various forms of sin and mayhem with sailing ships
from far away ports and their crews enjoying their liberties along
the waterfront.
Nyhavn is quite easy to get to as it sits at the end of the Strøget,
a very long pedestrian-only shopping district. The Strøget (general
translation “to wander”) starts in the center of Copenhagen at City
Hall Square, and runs for many blocks. It is the longest auto-free
zone in Europe. |
