Arhus is the second largest city in
Denmark, with a population of well over 300,000 citizens in the city
proper and at least 1.2 million people in the surrounding area.
Situated on the Kattegat Sea on the eastern coast of the Jutland
peninsula, Arhus is an economic powerhouse and is Denmark's
principal port city. A modern and vibrant city, Arhus offers
an active night life as well as a magnificent cultural experience.
One of the most impressive attractions in Arhus is Old Town Arhus
(Den Gamble By). While Old Town Arhus is not actually an old
part of the city, it is a unique opportunity to walk back in time
through a collection of marvelously restored historic Danish buildings.
The buildings, many dating to medieval times, have been gathered from all around the country
and assembled into a truly impressive outdoor museum.
Here history does come to life. Actors in period costume
wander the streets and go about their business in the buildings,
giving visitors a first hand view of what life was like in a small
Danish town from the Middle Ages into the present. Arhus
features 70 buildings with 30 workshops, 27 viewable rooms of old
residences, and ten
shops and trade stalls. You will find a pharmacist,
bookbinder, bakery, saddler, and many other commercial and home
crafts that were as vital in the past as they are today. Arhus
also has a fully functioning windmill. These exhibits will provide an informed
perspective on commerce and daily life from a bygone era.
