"What
are Zombie walks," you ask? So you've never seen any of the
classic Zombie movies like, Night of the Living Dead, or Dawn of the
Dead?
A Zombie walk is an organized
gathering of like minded souls who show up costumed as Zombies and
make their way through city streets or shopping malls, and generally
concluding the route at a local cemetery or park.
Zombie walks are primarily an
underground (no pun intended) activity, organized mostly through
word of mouth or online message boards. So in many cases you
could say they are a bit impromptu, spur of the moment.
Often times organized to celebrate or
commemorate an event, such as the movie Dawn of the Dead (at the
actual filming location), the gatherings are also staged to raise
awareness of community or social needs such as blood or food drives.
The largest yet staged Zombie Walk consisted of 894 Zombies on
October 29, 2006, at the Monroeville Mall (filming location of Dawn
of the Dead).
It was organized to benefit the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food
Bank, and an attempt to get noticed by the Guinness Book of World
Records.
Zombie
Walks are becoming popular all over the world . . . well at least
anywhere that doesn't imprison (or Zombie-ize) their citizens for
congregating for a little harmless fun, or for watching films from
the western hemisphere.
