Welcome to Zuko the realm of Dr. Von Zuko

Through out the centuries Festivals have been organized to celebrate nearly any type of event  or experience imaginable.  There are festivals to celebrate life, death, the seasons, the cosmos, and all manner of purely concocted fantasy. . . and yes, even products like Red Bull!

Red Bull Flugtag Chicago

The RED BULL FLUGTAG Chicago!

Wild and as wacky as any 'average Joe' competition can get, the Red Bull FLUGTAG (Flying Day) challenges teams of 'fearless good sports' to build an imaginative, human-powered flying machine . . . and then fling themselves off of a 30-foot high platform.  Fortunately, the Red Bull FLUGTAG launch platform is suspended over water . . . which is generally a little bit softer than concrete at that height.

The objective of the challenge is for Red Bull FLUGTAG teams to achieve flight.  Points are awarded by the illustrious panel of judges based on the creativity and showmanship of the team.  Of course, to achieve top honors these human-powered craft have to actually fly.

Flight distance is the measure by which the aviator's abilities are judged, however, most . . . and all with a great deal of fanfare, simply plummet off of the edge of the deck.

human-powered bi-plane Red Bull FLUGTAG
This awesome looking RED BULL FLUGTAG Bi-plane entry looks like it has some real potential for flight . . . but it all just boils down to how fast can it's pilot run and how hard can the crew push?

The RED BULL FLUGTAG Venue:

Here's how it works: Teams can be comprised of anyone . . . your co-workers, relatives, complete strangers, or your beer buddies, in short any average Joe will do.

You must, of course fill out all of their paperwork, registration forms, liability waivers, and all that good stuff.

Teams apply maximum creativity (an perhaps even ingenuity) in designing and building a 100% human powered flying machine, that just might fly!  The more outrageous, the better.

And, lets not forget costumes.  Teams must have costumes . . . preferably with a theme of some description.

Each team puts together a little, well choreographed, musical act . . . after all, you just can't run up there and plunge off the end of the platform with your flying machine . . . there are hundreds of thousands good people in the crowds drinking copious amounts of chilled Red Bull, and they must be entertained.

Following the highly entertaining and hopefully 'magical' performance, the team propels (pushes) their homemade, 100% human-powered flying machine down the launch platform . . . and into history!  (If they are good.)

I do believe however, points are also awarded for the most spectacular crash!

RED BULL FUEL

If there's a statement here, we're sure it's "Some day you'll be able to power your car with Red Bull . . . the cost will be about the same (or possibly lower) than gasoline!

Pie in the Sky at FLUGTAG

The Pie in the Sky team.  Now you just have to give this team some points when they are creative enough to add a Red Bull can holder to their pizza slice costumes!

Celebrity Sightings:

You just never know who (or what) you'll run into at the big blue and white "Portable (chemical) Toilet."  Now you just have to wonder . . . how did the Smurfs get that distinctive shade of blue?

Promotional Ooops!

The promoters of the 2008 Chicago RED BULL FLUGTAG would do well to head back to school . . . in all of their promotions they say . . . "over the salty waters of North Avenue Beach."  Uhhh, that would be Lake Michigan folks, and Lake Michigan is "FRESH WATER" or at least it has been for about the last couple of million years!

In fact did you know that the Great Lakes (of which Lake Michigan is one) contains about 22% of the worlds fresh water?
