The Rolling Stones: Shake Your Hips
September 16, 1970, Deutschlandhalle, Berlin, Germany

The Shake Your Hips concert was the first Stones tour in Europe
since 1967.
I had the good fortune to score some really good seats at this
concert . . . front and center's good right? And yes, it truly was an experience to
remember. Enjoy my little photo montage . . .

One of the big surprises of this show was the opening act . . . none
other than Chicago's own, Buddy Guy! A big favorite and a
"Monster of a Guitar Player" Buddy Guy has opened for The Stones on
numerous tours ever since.
The Battle Outside: (A
sometime standard occurrence for a Stones Concert)
An even bigger surprise was the riot
outside. And for those of you who have never been to Berlin . . .
you do not want to face off with The Berlin Police!
Being behind the infamous "Iron Curtain" in those days the Berlin Police
were essentially a paramilitary force (to keep the bad guys on the other
side of "The Wall"). There is nothing scarier then turning a corner to
come face-to-face with a wedge of black-leather-clad troops wielding
huge shields and three foot long truncheons (clubs) and shotguns covered head to toe
in body armor lock-stepping right at you.
Ahhh, yes, this was the second time in my life I would experience a face
full of tear gas. (Not a pleasant experience.) At the end of it
all, dozens of misguided youth visited the emergency rooms and more than
50 arrests were made. The street looked like a war zone with cars
turned over and debris scattered everywhere. Fortunately, my
buddy's and I were only there to see the Stones concert and we managed
to get out of harms way after the first barrage of tear gas came sailing
our way.
The concert itself was freekin' amazing! The Rolling Stones were
at the top of the heap in those days!
