The "Super
Concert '70" at Deutschlandhalle

September 4, 1970
Featuring: Jimi Hendrix, Procol Harum,
Ten Years After, Canned Heat, Cat Mother, Cold Blood and Murphy Blend.

Jimi Hendrix Experience, was the
headliner act for Super Concert '70 and they closed the concert with
some real heat and intensity.

Jimi's signature "Sunshine of
Your Love" and "Purple Haze" whipped the crowd into a real
frenzy . . .the arena was already filled with a 'purple
haze' of sorts and then the boot-legged Roman candles
started going off everywhere . . . bouncing off the rafters
into the crowd, off the crowd and onto the stage, and
amazingly Deutschlandhalle didn't burn down! It's a wonder! (This
was Jimi's second to last performance, just days before his untimely
death.)
One of my favorite Hendrix CD compilations
The Best of Jimi Hendrix gives you all Jimi's best.

Canned Heat |

Canned Heat: Blues Rock and Boogie
band from Los Angeles. Canned Heat developed a huge
following in the in the late 60's and early 70's. Canned Heat
could always be counted on to deliver a 'heated performance' of
extremely cool heavy attitude blues-rock. Their two signature
tunes, "Going up the Country" and "On the Road Again" had every nook
and cranny of the huge Deutschlandhalle arena rockin' heavy!
Canned Heat was (and still is) one of my favorites for honest
American Blues. The group
was founded in 1966 by "Blind Owl" Wilson and Bob "The Bear" Hite
(in above photo). Many of their "always cookin"
interpretations were inspired by the 1920's blues recordings of
Floyd Jones and Henry Thomas. In spite of a number of
personnel changes over the years, Canned Heat still exists today and
cranks out some mighty hot tunes. Check out their official
website at

Canned Heat's BEST album ever . . . "Uncanned!
The Best of Canned Heat."
Procol Harum

Procol Harum
at the 1970 Super Concert in Berlin.
Procol Harum is a British Rock band formed in the 1960's and were in
the forefront of what is now called "progressive" or "symphonic
rock. Their biggest hit was a 1967 release titled "A Whiter
Shade of Pale."
All I can remember at this concert however was "Oh my god
. . . it's Procol Harum."

Alvin Lee in concert and "Big Red" Alvin's
highly customized and legendary Gibson 335.
Alvin significantly modified his 335. One of his most notable
modifications was the addition of a Strat back pick-up to get the
best of both . . . Strat and Gibson humbucker sounds. Combined
they add to Alvin's distinctive playing style. |
